The espresso-based drinks allow the chain’s McCafé concept to better compete with Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts

The new beverage options can be served either hot or iced.

Since the beginning of the year, Starbucks has continuously dished out new items, including two macchiato drinks and new bottled beverages in grocery stores. Recently, McDonald’s rolled out three new McCafé drinks, but they’re currently only available in Northern California.

According to Brand Eating, the fast-food chain is testing out a caramel macchiato, which is made of espresso, caramel-flavored syrup, and steamed milk with a caramel drizzle; a French vanilla cappuccino, which is made of espresso, steamed milk, vanilla-flavored syrup, and a layer of cream foam; and an Americano, made of espresso and hot water.

Late last year, McDonald’s announced its plans for major McCafé upgrades, including pricey espresso machines and sustainably sourced coffee. The locations currently serving the new drinks — in the Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto areas in California — have received new machinery better equipped to make espresso drinks.

Through March 26, participating McDonald’s locations will be offering small cups of the new drink options for $1 each.

For so many, an espresso machine is an appliance that makes a whole lot of sense. If you’re ready to take the (delicious) plunge and buy an espresso machine, you’ve come to the right place.
